The Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, also known as the ESG, is a relatively new weight loss treatment that offers a less invasive bariatric surgery option.
What is the ESG procedure?
Developed from the same principles of the Gastric Sleeve (VSG), the ESG reduces the overall capacity of the stomach. This will lead to patients feeling more satisfied from eating smaller portions. The ESG offers a weight loss procedure without any invasive incisions to the abdomen. The procedure is carried out by endoscope, this is when a long flexible telescope is passed through the mouth and into the stomach cavity. Once within the stomach, sutures (stitches) are then made to the internal stomach wall via the endoscopic device, to create a tube shaped, smaller stomach.
The ESG procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes an hour to complete. As no part of the stomach is removed, the procedure is fully reversible.
The benefits of the ESG procedure:
As the ESG procedure is less invasive than other forms of weight loss treatments, the recovery period is much faster and typically would only require a single nights stay in hospital.
The ESG is a relatively new procedure, so long term outcome data is limited. The current data suggests a 20% loss of body weight in the short-term. As a result of losing weight, patients can experience similar additional health benefits as other conventional bariatric procedures, including improvements in diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnoea.
Risks and complications of the ESG procedure:
The risks with the procedure are very low, however, some patients may experience mild nausea and abdominal discomfort for a week post procedure.
· There is a 1 in 1000 risk of perforation of the stomach, causing peritonitis, which may require surgery.
· There is a 1 in 5000 risk of bleeding from the stomach that might require further treatment.
ESG aftercare and maintenance:
A key part of any weight loss intervention is a comprehensive aftercare program. Streamline Surgical will provide a two-year inclusive aftercare package, which allows patients to work closely with our expert clinical team. We will help patients to learn how to work with the ESG, making the right dietary choices, vitamin intake and lifestyle changes. All of which, will help to maximise potential longer-term weight loss goals.
Suitability for the ESG procedure:
The ESG procedure is potentially suitable for most individuals with a low to moderately raised BMI of 30 to 45 kg/m2. The ESG is a weight loss option for those individuals who want to avoid conventional weight loss surgery.
