The Milk Diet

As part of your preparation for your weight loss surgery your specialist dietitian or nurse will advise you on a special pre-operative diet. The most frequently used is the Milk Diet.

It is imperative that patients follow a pre-operative diet for a number of reasons:

  • To shrink the size of your liver; this makes access to your stomach during surgery easier and reduces the risk of damage to your liver during the operation
  • To avoid the temptation of having a large meal or last supper the night before the operation.

At Streamline Surgical we feel it is important for us to understand what our patients going though and we often get asked about the milk diet. With this in mind a few of the Streamline Surgical support staff decided to try it.

Before following the milk diet, Angela, Sarah and Leigh had to get the okay from our Bariatric specialist team, to make sure it would be safe for them to follow the Milk Diet.

Here is what they thought:

Ange – I don’t like milk but I found this quite easy.  Day two was the most difficult day for me, but once I had got through it psychologically, I felt great about carrying on. It really curbed my hunger and I didn’t struggle with it at all.

Leigh – I love milk so found this easy to follow. That said, it was nice to have the Oxo drink to break up the day and a sugar free jelly to have something to physically chew.

Sarah – I too love milk and used the Crusha milk flavouring to add a bit of variety throughout the day. The only problem was my cat loved it as well! I couldn’t put a glass down for a second or she would be there lapping it up.  All in all it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it might be.

If you any concerns or questions about the milk diet it is important to speak to your specialist team, who will be able to support you throughout your weight loss surgery journey.
