Hi all, I am new to this forum just getting started on my WLS process and wondering what to expect. I have my all day assessment at ST Richards on 27th Feb 2015 but not sure what happens after. Any advice is welcome

Hello mccharm, I am a newbie as well, my assessment was on 16/01/2015 and I have been accepted for a gastric bypass, it is a long day but to be honest it went quite quickly as you have to have your height and weight measured, then you see a psychologist, a specialist bariatric nurse, a dietician, a doctor, an anaesthetist and finally a surgeon or registrar. My advise is to get as much information as possible of the choices od operations available, watch the Fat Surgeons/Fat Doctors uk series as they are very informative. They like you to be as informed as possible, and just be honest. I am now waiting for my date and trying to lose weight to make my surgery safer and make it easier on the poor surgeon. I expect that you are excited, like me but nervous until you get the go ahead. This is a brilliant forum with lovely members who truly care, they will be leaving messages soon. You have chosen a wonderful hospital and when you have your assessment, you will be surprised at how nice everyone is and no-one judges you, such a unexpected pleasure. Welcome to the start of your journey……

Thanks, I am counting down the days until my appointment which seems to have taken so long to have come round.

So far everyone has indicated that a bypass is my best option and I have spent a lot of time looking in to it so hope that the surgeon agreed that this is the way to go. My brother had a bypass around 7 years ago and he has talked me through his highs and lows so hope Ian fairly prepared (if you can be lol).

Did the hospital give you any idea how long the waiting list is at the moment?

3-6 months unfortunately but hey it will give me time to lose a bit of weight. I wanted the bypass and they agreed so I shouldn’t think that they will differ. Good luck sunshine….

Hi Mccharm & welcome to our friendly forum. Not sure how much help I can be with the process but there are plenty who can. I wish you’ll the very best.
Please ask as many questions as you want someone is bound to know the answer or can find someone who does.
What operation are you hoping to have?
    Take care x

Hi treeza, I am hoping for the bypass. As I mentioned my brother had this done a few years ago and I have kind of set my mind on this being my best option as long as the surgeon agrees. I have looked at the band but it doesn’t look as effective and I have a real mental hang up about having something floating around inside me lol. During my tier 3 journey all of the specialists suggested bypass would most likely be recommended by the hospital so fingers crossed.

Hi there mccharm and welcome to our friendly forum

This is a place for support, friendship and understanding. We are all at different stages so almost anything you ask, one of us will be able to help you!

I had my bypass at St Richard’s too. Fantastic staff. They are so thoughtful and respectful. You will be treated with dignity at all times. I chose bypass over band so just make sure you let everyone know your preference. I wonder who will be your surgeon? I had Shaw Somers but they are all superb.

Looking forward to hearing all about it!

    Doodah x
