Hi my names Julie, and i live in Manchester. I have been fighting for wls for 25months. When i first applied for funding i done everything they asked of me hospital appointments ect. The surgeon said i meet the criteria for a gastric bypass. My GP applied for funding they asked me to do a 6month low cal diet witch i did then my GP applied again after 7months and they said the criteria has changed and i don’t fit into it anymore Ive contacted my MP he contacted the PCT now because of my depression and my knee the PCT advised my GP to apply for individual funding for an exceptional case has this happened to anyone else or can anyone give me any advise plz.

This is what I’m doing to try to get my funding. I’ve got letters from the surgeon, letters from a back specialist, letter from my dr saying I now have IGT and letters from Nick Finer at UCL. You don’t have to have money to do this as I found a solicitor who was willing to take my case on. It’s never been done before in this country and I just hope it might well help others who are in the same position as I am in. Please feel free to contact me if you would like some advise. Fingers crossed for Oct 21st as that’s when the court case is being held.

Hopefully you will now know I won my funding without it getting to court. I have gone to the media to tell the story simply because I would like other people in my position to know there is hope after being turned down at appeal. The more people who fight their PCT’s the more chance there is that they will get their noses out of their back sides and realise that helping people before they develop serious side effects of obesity is better then paying for their drugs later on. I am a carer for my son and so don’t work but would love to be able to help other people with their struggle in my boring free time while the kids are at school. I’ve been put on this earth for a reason and think this might be why!!

Good for you. Is it worth contacting the lady from Berks who took on NHS? Just a thought.
I back you all the way it is so unfair when you have medical evidence to back you up.
Good luck and please do not lose hope xx :grouphug:

    I wouls keep going.
Ask them the grounds on which they turned you down.
I got exceptional funding. I’d looked at the published criteria and built up a history of all the hoop jumping parts ahead of asking. My BMI was one below the level I’d automatically qualify for surgery but I’d started from a point where I would have qualified but due to diabetes and Insulin, could get no further and I also had been on Orlistat for the maximum time recommended,so had to stop that, too.

It might be worth getting the medics to ‘cost out’ the various traetments you have to build up a picture of how much potential saving there could be if the co-morbidities would be solved or minimised. It might then be more cost effective in terms of the expenditure against the long term reductions.
Try to think of it from as many angles as you can. Under the Freedom of Information act,you can ask them for figures of the number of patients with similar co-morbidities who were given funding, too. This might give you a clearer picture of what you’re up against. xx

Never lose hope. I’m happy to help if anyone wants it. I’m 2 days into pre op diet now and all’s going well. I couldn’t eat it all yesterday so am wondering if I’m now a freak! lol
