We always recommend that you have some fluid removed from you band before elective surgery. This is for several reasons:-

-Two weeks of good nutrition will improve your healing after the operation

-having minimal restriction will make the general anaesthetic safer.

-You will be able to have good nutrition, take essential medication and pain relief without difficulty.

-You will be less likely to vomit which will reduce your chance of slippage or abdominal pain.

In a true emergency the anaesthetist can take measures to make the anaesthetic safer but it is preferable to take action beforehand. Most clinicians have had to see unwell patients shortly after operations when their bands had tightened during surgery.
