After receiving news that I have been awarded funding from Medway PCT NHS Trust on October 3rd 2012 on the third attempt, I have received my first appointment letter yesterday giving the appointment for Friday 23rd November at my chosen hospital Queen Alexandra in Portsmouth with Shaw Somers. The letter states I’ll be there for over four hours and includes the psychological assessment questions, a food diary to complete and another sheet with general questions about moods, depression and general medical history etc.

Who has seen Shaw Somers at QA Portsmouth under NHS funding? I’m keen to speak with people who have actually been there so I can have a rough idea of what to expect on the day.

Is it very different paying for the service yourself or being treated for the same thing under the NHS funding? I wondered why the seminars are geared towards people funding their weight loss surgery themselves and do not really cater for people being funded via the NHS.

Also as the hospital is about 110 miles away from me how many times did you need to go prior to then after surgery?

All answers greatly appreciated

Thanks 🙂

I’ve just got in from my first post op appointment, in Portsmouth this afternoon with Shaw, my discharge from QA was four weeks ago tomorrow. The only difference is I funded my op but having read other posts it appears your appointment will be with a everyone on one day, then probably the only other appointment you might get pre op is your pre op assessment hopefully.

Having just seen Shaw Somers today he says I will see him again in about three months, I have to see the dietitian at regular intervals and the bariactric nurse. I will see Shaw regularly over the next two years.

QA is a well run clean and modern hospital having undergone a massive building and make over finishing in 2009, I just wish it was my local hospital. Car parking is good and there is a train station at Cosham which is about 15 minute walk away.

I understand why you are asking as you travelling from a long distance, I only live 61 miles away and can drive to QA in just over an hour! But the biggest bonus you have Shaw Somers as your consultant .

Funding myself I only had 3 pre op appointments 1) to see Shaw 2) dietitian 3) pre op assessment but I did go to my first appointment with an extensive medical history at this point it was decided I should have my op at QA. My GP was instrumental in giving me copies of letters, test results and summaries to take with me, which I was reluctant to produce immediately but after ten minutes I felt it, would be productive to had these to Shaw who was even more delighted when I said they were for him to keep.

I wish you all the best for the 23rd, sorry I am not able to answer you main question.
Good Luck.
