I have primary lymphoedema and lipoedema and have MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) and bandaging twice weekly. I wear compression garments and go to the world’s foremost lympoedema clinic – the Wittlinger Therapiezentrum in Austria for 3 weeks each year. I was only diagnosed with all of this 2 years ago – I thought I was just very fat – and they have been enormously helpful. It was the Doctor at the Clinic that advised me to have Weight loss surgery – because she knows that if I lose enough weight, the lymphoedema will improve massively. It is not curable, but it is manageable. The bandaging and the compression garments aren’t great – but the smaller I get the less medical they will become – until they have them in normal sizes – really pretty ones in all sorts of colours and patterns – that look like designer stockings!

It’s a long tough journey – but will be so worth it. The Clinic Doctor reckons I can lose over 100 kilos and already the weight loss I am experiencing has positively affected my legs. So please try and find out more about special MLD and Bandaging in your area. The British Lymphoedema Society can help and there is Professor Mortimer leading a specialist Lynphoedema clinic at St George’s Tooting in London.

Good luck!
