I had my pre-assessment recently, went on my own (my choice), but really wished I had taken a book or magazine to read as there was quite alot of waiting between seeing the anaethetist, dietician and nurse. Possibly as my appointment was at 12.15 this influenced things, but it took about two and a half hours to see three people (all very helpful), then after that went for bloods to be done, which was very speedy. A book or magazine would have been most welcome!

On the subject of books or magazines the nurse I saw said that it was worth taking something to read on admission day in case you were one of the later ones on the operating list, I do also remember reading on here that post-op a magazine is about as much as people can generally manage, and I have taken note!
