I am a qualified counsellor, but have realised professional counselling rarely helps me! I am better with just a good friend listening, who doesn’t force me to trawl back through my past – been there, done that, used the tissues, need to look at today and tommorow, not yesterday!! Even tried hypno for emotional eating, but of course, actually involved my trying to remember ‘repressed childhood memories’. Give me strength! That is not to say I don’t think counselling is hugely valuable, of course I do, and to get through the trauma of his accident I paid for some of the best help in the country for my husband. A trained psychologist with years of experience used CBT along with a rapid eye movement technique and snapped my husband out of non-responsive suicidal state, which nothing I was doing could. x
