Time to put you first

It is often an inherent behaviour for humans to put the needs of friends and family before their own. However, taking on the goal of a healthier life and losing a large amount of weight requires 100 per cent dedication. It is important to make time no matter what; it is easy for self-care activities to slide off the to-do list.

Part of the new lifestyle pattern should be – shopping for the correct healthy foods, preparing meals, exercising daily, relaxing and planning ahead. It can often feel like ‘Mission Impossible’ to break those old unhealthy habits and lifestyle patterns. It is important to remember that the benefits are worth the efforts.

A great starting point is to listen to what your body and bariatric clinical team are telling you, then start to put those needs in the forefront of your mind. Here are some suggestions to help you step up your self-care routine:

Set a daily reminder to take a 15-minute break everyday to do something that you enjoy, even if you just sit with your eyes closed.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, whether from those close to you, your bariatric clinical team, or even joining a support group.

Remind yourself how far you have come. Take time to notice and recognise your achievements. ‘ After all you are still lapping those still sitting on the couch.’

Get a good night’s sleep. When you are tired, your willpower wanes. It is important for adults to aim for between 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
