During Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery
Is the surgery dangerous?
Every operation carries a certain degree of risk. The mortality rate associated with laparoscopic banding is 1 in 2000 and with gastric bypass, the risk is 1 in 200. Bariatric surgery is generally more high risk than other operations due to the size and co-morbidities of the patients
What are the complications associated with the surgery?
Possible complications of each surgery include bleeding, infection, bruising, blood clots and heart problems. Specific to the gastric band, patients can experience band slippage or breakage, band erosion, lap band port rotation or tube damage. Specific to the bypass surgery, patients can experience dumping syndrome and are at an increased risk of herniation
What do I need to do just before surgery?
You will be admitted to hospital on the day of your surgery. Please ensure you have packed enough belongings for the duration of your stay and that you have showered the night before to minimize the risk of infection. Ensure you have also followed the pre-operative diet and stopped any medications advised by your surgeon
How long will the surgery last?
Operation times vary according to the procedure. Gastric bands take approximately one hour to perform and bypasses take between 2-3 hours.
