Why
it is recommended that I have a psychological assessment
before I have surgery?
Weight loss surgery is a life changing event, it is very difficult to predict when you embark on this journey how you are going to feel after surgery. If for example, you are what we call an emotional eater, that is someone who has managed difficult emotions, life events and trauma with food and having this surgery overnight we are literally taking or severely restricting your coping mechanisms. People react to this post surgery in many different ways and it is our job as part of the multi disciplinary team to ensure that you are fully prepared for this and to help you identify other ways of coping with difficult emotions and situations without resorting to food.
