Gastric Sleeve Surgery
What is it?
The Sleeve Gastrectomy, sometimes called the "gastric sleeve'" is a relatively new operation. It is a restrictive procedure which reduces the volume of the stomach by creating a small capacity "sleeve"
All Streamline surgeons offer this procedure, but the lack of long term data (compared to the gastric band and gastric bypass) means we are cautious in recommending this approach.
How much weight might I loose?
Weight loss probably fits in between the band and the bypass
How does it work?
Weight Loss Mechanism
Restrictive: The patients stomach is reduced from a capacity of approximately 900mls to about 100mls.
As a result, patients feel full after a very small amount of food, and therefore lose weight because they eat less. Changes in hormone profiles also result in a decreased hunger drive.
The Operation
The Sleeve Gastrectomy operation is done with keyhole surgery and takes about an hour to do. The stomach is restricted by dividing it vertically and removing more than 85% of it. This part of the procedure is not reversible. The stomach that remains is shaped like a banana with a capacity of 100mls. The nerves to the stomach and the outlet valve (pylorus) remain intact with the idea of preserving the functions of the stomach while reducing the volume.
Patients normally can go home after 2 nights.
