The Bariatric Surgical Service has been 'operating' for ten years. Initially at King Edward VII hospital, Midhurst and subsequently at The Royal West Sussex NHS Trust. A comprehensive multi-disciplinary obesity-management team has been established. The combined experience of this team in bariatric surgery is second to none. The core multi-disciplinary team includes the Bariatric Surgeons, Bariatric Anaesthetists, Specialist Nurses and Bariatric Dieticians. Respiratory Physicians, Gastroenterologists and Diabetologists participate in the multi-disciplinary team as needed. In addition, the unit works in collaboration with two psychologists who specialise in eating disorders.
ANAESTHETISTS
The four dedicated Bariatric Anaesthetists are Andrew Kendall, Michael Margarson, Mark Bentley and Robert Hill. They each have great experience of Large-patient anaesthesia.
Dr Andrew Kendall
Andrew Kendall is lead consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at St Richards Hospital in Chichester. With Shaw Somers, he set up the bariatric service in 1998. He has a personal experience of more than 300 bariatric anaesthetics.
Dr Michael Margarson MD, FRCA, Dipl ICM (UK)
Michael Margarson has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Richards Hospital since 2003 and is the Clinical Director of the Intensive Care Unit.
Dr Robert Hill, MB BS, FRCA
Robert Hill has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Richard's Hospital since 2001. He was previously Associate Professor at Duke University Medical Centre, North Carolina.
Dr Mark Bentley, MB BS, FRCA
Mark Bentley has been a consultant Anaesthetist at St Richard's Hospital since 2003 and a member of the bariatric team since 2004.
DIETICIANS
The team of three dieticians Denise Thomas, Francis Hay and Jilla Ferguson are part of the nutrition and dietetic department of Portsmouth Hospitals Trust. As a dietetic team they have been involved in bariatric surgery since 1998. All the dieticians are part of the mental health dietetic service in Portsmouth and as such hold eating disorder caseloads and have extensive experience in managing patients with significant eating pathology problems. The dietetic team have all undertaken behaviour change training and counselling skills. The team liaises with the patient's local dietetic service and will offer advice to the patient's own dietician. All dieticians regularly undertake CPD in obesity surgery management. Denise Thomas leads the team.
PSYCHOTHERAPISTS
Janet Biglari M.A.
Senior Specialist Psychotherapist. UKCP Accredited
Janet is a qualified psychotherapist with a Masters degree in Integrative Psychotherapy from London Metropolitan University and the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education.
Her area of clinical expertise is obesity and the treatment of its psychological co-morbidities. Janet has worked for a number of years with bariatric surgery patients helping them to come to terms with the emotional impact of surgery, and address the necessary lifestyle changes needed to reach and maintain a healthy weight loss. Janet is a qualified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) therapist and is a registered health coach In addition to her psychotherapy qualifications, Janet holds a qualification in Community Health and Nutrition from the University of Northampton.
Sevim Mustafa MSc.
Senior Specialist Psychotherapist
Clinical Supervisor. BACP Accredited UKRC registered
Sevim has a Masters degree in Integrative Counselling Psychotherapy from Greenwich University and specialises in the psychological aspects of Obesity.
Sevim is a qualified EMDR therapist and specialises in working with specific traumas. Her current clinical practice is focused on working with bariatric patients and their psychological issues. She works with individual patients’ as well as facilitating psycho-educational groups. Sevim is also a registered health coach.
PHYSICIANS
Jonathan Dakin
Jonathan Dakin is a consultant respiratory physician at Queen Alexandra Hospital with a special interest in obstructive sleep apnoea. He works with the bariatric unit assessing patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnoea. In addition, he participates in the peri-operative management of patients with significant respiratory impairment.
Hamish Duncan
Hamish Duncan is a consultant gastro-enterologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. He is an experienced endoscopist and has been fully trained in the endoscopic placement of intra-gastric balloons for morbid obesity.
Timothy Treble
Tim Treble is a consultant gastro-enterologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. His specialist interest is in nutrition. His role in the bariatric MDT is in the management of nutritional problems after obesity surgery.
SPECIALIST NURSES
Velia Hall
Velia Hall is a specialist bariatric surgical nurse. She has been with the service since it was first established at King Edward VII Hospital in 1998. Her role includes in-patient nursing care, outpatient assessment and telephone support. There is a large training component in Velia's role, teaching the ward staff nurses how to look after to bariatric cases. She has completed the Inamed course in laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.
Dee Wainwright
Dee Wainwright is a fully trained laparoscopic surgical care practitioner. She has attended an Inamed LAGB course and has been trained in outpatient laparoscopic adjustable gastric band management. In the bariatric service she is first assistant to the surgeon in theatre.
Administrative Staff
The unit's office is run by Chris Bigg, Jo Beach and Tara Fagan. Chris Bigg has been with the service since it was established in 1998. The office organises all aspects of the patient's pathway including the initial multi-disciplinary assessment, pre-operative assessment, admission and postoperative follow-up. The staff work closely with the patients building up a good rapport and provide telephone support for patients.
