It’s the first day back after my trip to the American Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery meeting. There’s much to learn from the American surgeons with regard to the pre- and aftercare. They seem to have so much long term experience and we have refined our treatment plans to adopt these improvements.

My name is Zoltan and I am the new Bariatric Fellow. As even my mother asked me what a bariatric fellow does, I thought I would explain to all of you what I do.

I am delighted to announce that I will shortly start filming for a brand new eight part Channel 4 series called ‘The Food Hospital’ that will air in the Autumn of this year. As some of you will know, I have previously taken part in a TV series called ‘The Fat Doctor’ which followed some of my patients through weight loss surgery and how they adjusted to life with a gastric bypass or a gastric band.

“I am having a gastric bypass in one week. I have been on the milk diet for a week already and there is another week to go. Its torture! Why do I need to do this?”
We really do understand, and if it’s any consolation most of our weight loss patients say this is the worst part of the whole experience.

I read that other weight loss surgery patients on Streamline Surgical’s forum talk about a “honeymoon” period, when after a gastric bypass you stop feeling hungry. Is this true, and how long does it last?

Dramatic weight loss can have significant effect on a marriage and interpersonal relationships in general. The National Health Service has acknowledged depression as a physiological imbalance. The lack of serotonin and other mood regulating hormones is the leading factors for this disease. Not all depression is clinical by nature; many suffer from situational depression which can ultimately lead to a more debilitating condition. (more…)
